A Vancouver freight quote should show where the service starts and where it ends. Tell the forwarder if you need supplier pickup, arrival at a port or airport, delivery to your business, or the full route.
Share your cargo size and dates before comparing prices. For repeat shipments, include how often you expect to ship and ask who will manage the account.
Five providers to contact about your shipment
Welke publishes this guide and is included below. Use the list to start a conversation about your route. Confirm service availability and the team responsible for your shipment directly with each provider.
| Provider | Services to ask about | Confirm in the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Welke | Air, ocean and trucking, with customs brokerage available | Your route, named contact and agreed transport and customs scope |
| Kuehne+Nagel | Air, sea and road transport | Origin and destination handling, plus onward delivery |
| DSV | Air, sea and road transport | The current team and booking process, including former Schenker services |
| Expeditors | Air, ocean and ground transportation | The proposed transport plan and customs responsibilities |
| UPS Supply Chain Solutions | Ocean freight forwarding, including full-container and shared-container options | The specific freight service, delivery endpoints and separately billed charges |
Schenker is part of DSV. Ask for current service and contact information if your previous arrangements were under the Schenker name.
Check the scope for ocean freight
For goods arriving through Vancouver, identify the final destination when you request the quote. A shipment ending at a terminal needs a different plan from one delivered to a business in Surrey or Burnaby.
Ask who will arrange destination handling and onward transport. Confirm what information is needed before arrival and how changes will be communicated.
For exports, identify where the goods will be collected and which party will coordinate delivery at the overseas destination.
Give the air freight team the delivery requirement
Provide the cargo-ready date, package count, weight and dimensions. Explain when the goods need to reach the receiving business.
Ask the provider to distinguish airport arrival from final delivery. Include any receiving hours or appointment requirements in the shipment brief.
Include trucking and customs in the plan
For a shipment continuing by truck, provide the actual delivery address and any access restrictions. If the route crosses the Canada-U.S. border, confirm which party handles the customs filing and which documents they need.
A freight quote may cover transport, customs brokerage or both. Ask for the responsibilities and charges to be stated clearly.
Compare quotes using the same shipment details
Send each provider the same brief:
- Goods and any known handling requirements.
- Pickup and delivery addresses, including countries.
- Package count, weight and dimensions.
- Cargo-ready date and delivery needs.
- Expected shipment frequency and whether customs brokerage is required.
Ask about quote validity and charges that depend on events after booking. For recurring shipments, discuss how the account team will handle updates and exceptions.
